THIS year's Golden Globes Awards, held on January 16, 2011, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California broke all boundaries and was filled with unexpected occurrence that made the headlines on both sides of the Atlantic. The buzz wasn't only because of the winners or losers but because of the host, “Ricky Gervais “ British Actor and Comedian . Not only was he a brilliant host, he would have given William Shakespeare a run for his money. The attendance was impressive, majority of the A-list celebrities were present and the night promised to be spectacular but nobody was prepared for how spectacular it turned out to be. Although, Ricky warned on Ellen DeGeneres show that; "This time I'm going to get it right. This time I'm going to make sure they don't invite me back” but no one thought he was thinking about committing career suicide.
Ricky Gervais opened the show saying “It's going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking or, as Charlie Sheen calls it, 'breakfast.'” He continued by commenting on Angelina Jolie and Jonny Depp's performances in The Tourist saying, seems like everything this year was three-dimensional. Except the characters in the Tourist. I feel bad about that joke," he said after his first dig. "I'm jumping on the bandwagon, because I haven't even seen The Tourist. Who has?" Although the exterior of Self- declared Anglophile, Johnny Depp was calm the speed of his gum chewing gave away the anger that must have been brewing underneath. Ricky didn't stop there. He went on to tell the audience that The Tourist had not been nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association just because its members wanted to hang out with the film's stars, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie "That is not the only reason," Gervais insisted "They also accepted bribes." If Hollywood Foreign Press Association wasn't been sued by its leading publicist for 2 million dollars claiming that the group accepted bribes for recognizing certain films in their ceremony, I'm sure the latter part of the joke would have been taken with a pitch of salt.
Having a jibe at gay scientologists, he said, referring to Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor's film I Love You Phillip Morris: “Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. Sort of the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then” and added, “My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke.” He moved on to Sex and the City saying the team that air brushed the postal should have won the special effects award and said, 'Girls, we know how old you are. I saw one of you in an episode of Bonanza.' He showed 84 years old Hugh Hefner (owner of playboy) no mercy congratulating him on his recent engagement to 24 years old Crystal Harris, he said "Speaking of the Walking Dead, congratulations to Hugh Hefner” he went on to describe how things would be between the couple and he literally gagged and advised her not to look at it. He introduced Bruce Willis as “Ashton Kutcher's dad which was hilarious though Bruce didn't appear to think so. While introducing Robert Downey Jr., he listed many of his works, then said; “but many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford clinic (where celebrities go to sober up) and Los Angeles County Jail” Though some in the audience were uncomfortable and sat frozen-faced, many including Robert de Niro, (recipient of Cecil B. Demille Award) Tina Fey, Christian Bale and Halle Berry were clearly amused.
Just like the unexpected twist in the hosting, the Award winners were unexpected though they deserved to win, I thought the King speech would have cleaned house but it was The Social Network that did with a total of 4 Awards for best motion picture drama, Best Director, screenplay, and Original Score while The King's Speech won one award which went to Colin Firth for Best Dramatic Actor.
The Kids Are All Right won two Awards one for Best Actress which went to Annette Bening and Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. The Fighter also won two Awards for Best Supporting Actor “Christian Bale” and Best Supporting Actress 2 Melissa Leo”. Best Foreign Language Picture went to Denmark for “In a Better World”, Best Dramatic Actress went to Natalie Portman for Black Swan, Paul Giamatti won Best Actor Comedy or Musical for “Barney's Version, Best Animated Film was won by Toy Story 3 and Best Song went to “Burlesque” “you haven't seen the last of me”
